Reviews posted on Start Narrative Here this week:
- The Alcoholic by Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel – a graphic novel memoir of alcohol addiction that is both funny and heartfelt.
- Running the Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian by Avi Steinberg – a look at life behind the bars in a prison library for both inmates and staff.
- Mad Men Unbuttoned: A Romp Through 1960s America by Natasha Vargas-Cooper – an interesting, if brief, introduction to the social, cultural and historical contexts of the television show Mad Men.
24 Hour Readathon Overview:
Total number of pages read: 981
Total number of books read: 5 – 3 graphic novels, 1 non-fiction, 1 novel.
Total number of hours spent reading: 9.5
Well, that was something else. There’s still an hour and a half to go until the official end of the Readathon, but I’m throwing in the towel now. It seems that nothing can get between me and my need for sleep. I’m thinking, should I participate next time, I’ll have to make sure it’s not after a full day of work on very little sleep in the first place. That said, it was fun, if totally draining! Who knew sitting around and reading could be so exhausting! A massive shout out and hearty thanks to the cheerleaders and well-wishers that dropped by to offer their encouragement: Amanda, Cass, Colleen, Collette, Julie, Mae, Marg, Samantha & Softdrink.
Here’s what I got through in the 9.5 hours I was reading:
- Life Sucks by Jessica Abel, Gabe Soria & Warren Pleece
- The Accidental Billionaires: Sex, Money, Betrayal and the Founding of Facebook by Ben Mezrich
- The Wild Things by Dave Eggers
- The Exterminators: Volume One, Bug Brothers by Simon Oliver & Tony Moore
- The Exterminators: Volume Two, Insurgency by Simon Oliver, Tony Moore, Ande Parks & Chris Samnee
Somewhat lighter than my usual fare, but perhaps that was necessary to keep up the momentum. I’m pretty pleased with the effort, though I expected I would get through more. That’s okay, better to have too much to read than not enough. I’m not sure how I’m going to write about them, but I’m sure my thoughts on these books will be appearing here sometime over the next couple of weeks. Until then, I think it is time for some blessed, uninterrupted, deep sleep.
A few more of my Fitzgerald set have been arriving this week, only a couple more due in and then I’ve completed my whole set and sense of fulfillment and happiness will surely follow.
